What's the meaning of this sentence in the following passage?

"Although most romantic partners tended to consider the same ssues important,"

1) Most couples asked had same opinions in the controversial topics.
2) Most couples asked agreed that certain issues are important. For example, the Jones, both Mr. Jones and Mrs. Jones thought the topic of the death sentence is very important.

"Men and women often say that they are attracted by differences more than similarities. Now, a study concludes that couples get along better when they differ in their opinions. Twenty-two couples were asked about their attitudes on many controversial topics, from drugs to the death sentence. Although most romantic partners tended to consider the same ssues important, the couples with the strongest emotional ties were more likely to have different attitudes about the issues. The researchers beliveve that some philosophical disagreements may lead to more intense emotions between partners, resulting in greater passion."

It means that both partners think the same things are important (say, politics, honesty, the environment) but they don't necessarily have the same opinions about the important issues.
