I saw the quote in a book. I guess 'head on' might be used as 'in front'. If so, 'head on' must be 'an adverb', but I couln't find 'head' or 'head on' as 'an adverb' in English dictionary.

As a result, I think that the above quote is not correct. But I'm not sure.
Could you let me know if it is correct and it's a frequently used expression among natives?

The quote is correct. In that sentence, "head on" = "directly." It is a common expression.
