Hello, teachers, please help me.

I want to know why (A) and (D) cannot be correct answers to the following question:

------- in USPs labor dispute tried to find a positive agreement between the two opposing sides.
(A) A mediator (B) The mediator
(C) Mediator (D) Mediators

Can you explain why specifically? Thank you so much for your help in advance.

A, B, and D would all be correct, but C is definitely incorrect. You would not begin the sentence with just Mediator, singular, without an article. Whoever said that only B and C are correct was wrong.

A: Using "a mediator" implies that there were more than one--and it is not uncommon for there to be panels of mediators, usually three, to render a decision.

B: Using "the mediator" implies that there was only one, or if more, that the one just mentioned was the one who tried to find agreement.

D: Using "mediators" means that there were more than one, and that at least two of them tried to find agreement.
