Mr. Green has made it known that much of his collections is to be left to the nation.

How can "collections"(a plural noun) be modified by "much"? Shall I use "many" instead?

Thanks

It's worded a little awkwardly, but the meaning is that he will leave a substantial fraction of the things he has in his various collections (of art, stamps, coins, porcelain, or whatever). He is going to leave parts of each collection to the nation.

If you say "many" rather than "much," it means he will leave many whole collections to the nation, but reserve the others for different purposes.
