1.Who that has common sense can believe it?
2.What is the name of the dog that you have?
3.Who is the girl that is singing on the stage?
4.What is in the box that is on the table? |
I learned that 'that' in #1 should not be able to be replaced with 'who'.
But I saw the grammar book insisting that 'that' in #2,3,and 4 should not be able to be replaced with 'which','who',and 'which' each.
I think that 'who' or 'which' can be substituted for 'that' in #2,3,4.
Could you tell me if my opinion is wrong? If I'm wrong, can you explain the reason to me?
Thanks. |

Hi
Who,what, which, how, when, and where, they all are interrogatives, whichever is used in a question-word sentence with a relative clause, and a relative pronoun "that" should be used in this case,in order to avoid triggering double interrogatives(who or which is not used in here).
Who is the man that(not who) is standing there?
What is it that(not which) he is readig?
Where is the book that(not which) you bought yesterday?
How is the man that(not who) called on you a month ago?
Who that is honest will tell a lie? |
