1. D) is best. We know that Peter is just beside the classroom, close to it.
We can say 'Peter is out of the classroom.' In that case, we mean he is not in the classroom and his exact location is not important.
2. D) The same reason as above. |

1)The jewels are not in the car.
Should one say "The jewels are OUT OF the car." or "The jewels are OUTSIDE the car."?
(They have not be carried out right now and we are not sure whether they are near the car.)
2)The jewels are not in the country.
Should one say "The jewels are OUT OF the country." or "The jewels are OUTSIDE the country."? _________________ Thank you very much for your reply. |

1. The jewels are not in the car. Fine.
The jewels are OUT OF the car. No.
The jewels are OUTSIDE the car. No, not unless they are lying on the ground next to the car, or something like that.
2. The jewels are not in the country. Fine.
The jewels are OUT OF the country. Okay.
The jewels are OUTSIDE the country. Fine. Means they are nowhere in the country.
Don't ask me why there is a difference. Logically, it would seem there should be no difference whether we are talking about a car or a country, but I believe most native speakers would agree with the above usage.
But please tell us: Where are the jewels? _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
