Man: Look, it's pouring rain! The streets are starting to flood! If we try to get the station in that, we'll get soaked.
Let's wait until the storm abates.
Woman: Okay. I have an idea - we can go and browse in the adjacent bookstore for a while.
The awning will protest us.
Man: Good idea, Wendy. Just let me finish the remainder of my meal first.
I've still got a few bites left.

Would it be possible to replace adjacent with next?

We can go and browse in the next bookstore for a while.

I would use this expression when we are in or near a bookstore and want to go and browse in another one nearby.

Since we are in a restaurant, I would say, "We can go and browse in the bookstore next door."
