Hi tiani,
it's nice to hear from you.
i have come to singapore after finishing my secondary school in Indonesia.
i think it's not possible to learn much from the english lessons provided by the school as they tend to learn very basic stuff and hardly there's a long english passage to read.
so,perhaps you can find a reliable english language centre,it would be nice if you could learn from english native speaker.
i have faced a lot of difficulties in english when i came to singapore.such as how to write at least a 350 words essays, some situational writing skills as well..like how to write a report,a letter,a speech in a specified time.
it haunts me when i saw a long english reading passages, comprehension questions.and i don't know how to write a summary.
it takes a long time to familiarise myself to these stuffs, even after 2 years.maybe you don't have problems in grammar,if u are asked to construct a sentence.but when it comes to writing an essay,u might be troubled with what kind of sentences that correctly express the event.
if u ask me how to improve english,i will advise u to read english book.it may be a daunting task to read those thick english fiction books with slangs here and there.thus i advised u to to read the rather simple and thin fiction book..
i don't know if u can find these titles at your library,
tuesday with morrie-- by mitch albom
a child that called ''it'' by dave peltzer
these are the the first two books i have read in my life.it picks up my reading interest.
i think u can try to guess if u read words that u don't know.but i think you should not pause to jot down and find the meaning of every words that you don't know.but you can do it after reading 2 sections of it,and jot down the words u don't know and find the meaning at a dictionary.you may use eng-ind dictionary at the beginning of your learning, but after a year or two,i advised u to switch to eng-eng dictionary.u know there is oxford (the thick one)sell at gramedia,it will be best if you have an electronic dictionary that has thesaurus inside of it as well(choose an oxford one as well,i bought mine at s$150) and it's really convenient to use.
last but not least,if u have written any english essay, u can post it at this dace esl cafe,,i think there's a forum here for this,u can ask the teachers in this forum to help u to correct it.i think they are helpful and would certainly be able to give feedbacks to your essay.
finally, all the best for you in improving english,
i am trying to improve my english as well. |
