there is a cloze test:

Some snakes ____ their prey to death before eating them.

a) squash b) squeeze

the correct ans. is b

i want to know why a) is not proper.

Pick up a lump of clay. Hold it in your hand and close your fingers tightly around it. You are squeezing the clay.

Now put the lump of clay on the table and put your hand on top of it. Push down on the clay, flattening it against the table. You are squashing the clay.

Some snakes wrap themselves around their prey and squeeze them to death. I don't think any snakes press down on their pray and squash them to death.

And that's why only answer b is correct.
