I saw #1,2,3 in my dictionary. And also I saw #4 in an newspaper.
#1 through #3 is understandable to me. But #4 is a little akward to me so that I think 'They grade students' essays.' is correct rather than #4.
Could you tell me if my opinion is right or wrong?

We can say, "They grade students" or "They grade students' essays". Both are acceptable.
People are always graded on something.
