Please help;
Children in the U.S lag behind (those) in Japan in math.
I think "those" is the right answer and "ones" is not. But I just probably got that from experience and can't explain why.
Would you please explain why "those" is right and "ones" isn't.

Those is a demonstrative pronoun often used when the objects or groups being compared are distal (far from each other) in physical space or in concept or idea. Children in the U.S. are definitely physically far from children in Japan. There are 100 students participating in today's activities. The ones born before July will get a red name tag. Those born after June will get a blue name tag.
