Dear teachers,
I got a sales call from a firm trying to sell one of their products.
To conclude our conversation, the caller uttered:
"It's been a pleasure talking to you."
Should I say something in return as a courteous reply?
How about saying Likewise? Is it all right if don't say anything at all?
Thank you for your help.
Sabrina. |

The caller was reading a script and just said that to be polite. He or she was hoping you would buy something, and speaking with you was no pleasure, it was just a means to getting a sale.
If you were genuinely pleased with the conversation, you could say, "It was a pleasure speaking with you, too." Why not?
But most likely you were not interested in the call or the caller or the caller's product, and you did your best to get off the phone as soon as possible without being too rude.
In that case, it would be fine to say, "Thank you. Good-bye."
Some people are so tired of sales calls, they just hang up. The caller probably gets that many times per day. What a miserable job. That's why I'm usually polite to them, but still, I try to get off the phone as soon as possible. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
