You could say "as the reaction takes place," or "as the reaction happens," or "while they do it" (it meaning "returning back to their previous state"). Along the way is used to talk about other things that happen while some main event or action is taking place. You might walk home, and stop to pick berries on the way. Wink

By the way it might just be a typo, but it's spelled immediately (e not i).
