Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to panic, focusing his mind on each sharp turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock.Just then he reached for the radio mike again.
"Call fire station," he shouted, concentrating to form the words. "Emergency. Bee sting. Emergency. There in ten minutes."
"Five-ten," the center replied.
What does "five-ten" mean?
My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother's house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink.
What does "an end table" mean?
Thanks |

Probably it should read 10-5. This means the receiver of the message will relay it to its eventual destination (the fire dept.)
An end table is a small table usually placed at the end of a settee, sofa or couch. It is used for snacks ,books, or whatever you like, so they will be at hand when needed.
The "Ten code" is a series of code words used to represent commonly used phrases in voice communication. Used mainly by law enforcement.
