I understand #1, below, is natural English. The other day I came across #2, which I couldn't find in dictionaries at hand. Is it also natural English?
1. finish a race in first place
2. finish a race in first |

#1 is fine. #2. not so fine. You can finish first, but in some races, this may not mean you won.
If the guy won a race it is better to say so.
i.e. He won (the race). |
