a. They grew up fatherless, so they never had good role models.
Is it possible to omit the `role� ? - They never had good models.
b. We help them develop professional skills.
Is it possible to use receive: - we help them receive skills.
Please comment.

You could omit the word "role," but the meaning would be different. The term "role model" refers to a person, specifically to an individual that others respect and admire, as well as wish to emulate in action. That individual is modeling a role you play in life. If you were to omit the word "role," then you are no longer specifically referring to a person. The meaning becomes much more vague.
It is not entirely incorrect. You will often hear native speakers say "I received the skills necessary..." but I feel that using the word "developed" fits better semantically. |
