Dear teachers,
Can you explain the following sentence for me:
The next morning I'd just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship.
What part of speech is lost? Why is it used after preposition"for"?

If you give yourself up for lost, you have given up all hope of being found and expect to die.
Lost is the past participle of the verb to lose |
