Hello, teachers!
(1) Tom could barely pay for his own lodging, much more for that of his friends.
(2) Tom could barely pay for his own lodging, much less for that of his friends.
Which is better, (1) or (2)? I think that (2) is better, but why isn't (1) wrong?

2. Is correct.
Much less is a negative expression and much more is a positive expression. You are describing a negative situation. |
