Dear Teachers, please help;

This is from "Moondial" -

"The shock brings a fear that you can almost taste."

Does this sentence mean the fear is so real or something?
Can you please put this into some other expression?

Thank you.

I have heard it said that, when you are very scared, you get a strange taste in your mouth. I don't know if this is true, because when I have been very afraid, I am usually too busy running away to notice the taste in my mouth.
However, what the author says is that "The shock" (whatever that was) was extremely scary.
The shock terrified her/him.
The shock scared him to death (an idiom that means:- made him extremely frightened.
The shock petrified her (paralyzed her with fear).
....scared the hell out of her..
and so on.
