If his name is John and you are writing to him, of course you can start out with "Dear John,"
A dear John letter is a letter, written to a husband or boyfriend to tell them the relationship is over. It is believed to have been coined in World War 2 by American soldiers who were often overseas for years without getting home to their wives and girlfriends.
Naturally, some of the wives and girlfriends decided to begin relationships with other people rather than wait for the soldier to return from the war. |
