Hello,
I have read:
In just six seconds he was moving seventy miles per hour, the speed at which one's wing goes unstable on the upstroke.
Time after time it happened. Careful as he was, working at the very peak of his ability, he lost control at high speed.
Why is not it: his ability, he would lose control at high speed.
What would be the difference in meaning? What's proper English?
Alexander. |

You are thinking that the conditional mood is appropriate here, because of the preceding conditions, working at the peak of his ability... Careful...etc?
In my opinion you are not wrong. At the same time, the use of the perfect tense, as it is used here, is also quite acceptable. |
