Hello, teachers!!
They were far out, at the mercy of wind and weather.
I found the sentence in a certain grammar book.

(1) What does "They" refer to in the sentence above? Are "They" humans or things?
(2) What do you mean by "far out" in the sentence above?

They is a pronoun (third person plural) it refers to more than one person or thing that previously mentioned, or easily identified. It can also be used to refer to people in general.
Far out means a long way out... perhaps from shore, port, or safety..
I would say this sentence means they were on a boat of some sort, a great distance from shore, vulnerable to wind and waves. |
