Dear teacher,
That restaurant around the corner......... right after the Second World War was over and has been in business ever since.
Please clarify me why the answer is "was built" instead of "has been built".

The first part of the sentence is definitely in the past tense, so you use "was built". It was built in the late 1940s. It has been in business ever since means starting from when it was built up to the present time, it has been in business. You use the present perfect when something starts in the past and continues up to the present. (Well that's a quick way to explain it. There are a lot of subtleties with that tense that you don't need here.) |
