The following is my question:
Acer has since stormed up the charts to No. 2, with more than 14% of the market, ahead of Dell and behind only HP.
Would someone please paraphrase "storm up the charts to No.2" in the sentence? If possible, give one more example. Thanks a lot. |

| It means Acer is now the second largest seller of computers, second only to HP (Hewlett-Packard). In this sense "Stormed up the charts" means its sales rose rapidly. |

If you are wondering why the idiom involves charts, it goes back to the early days of rock and roll, when music magazines like Billboard started keeping track of record sales. Whichever record (single or album) sold the most in the last week was at the top of the chart. The charts usually ranked at least the top 100, and usually gave last week's position, number of weeks at that position, etc.
The charts multiplied to include all kinds of music--jazz, blues, country and western, you name it--and they continue up to this day. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
