Please help check out the answer.
If you want to become a good tennis player, you have to __________ your skill.
(A) sharpen (B) increase (C) progress (D) realize
The answer is (A), but how about (B)? Is there any difference?

I agree - B).(increase, meaning - make greater in degree) works as well.
Sharpen means - make or become sharp.
In fact hone would have been a better word than sharpen. While it does mean: make sharper (with a whetsone) it means also to make more focused or efficient.
Obviously if your skills are more focused and efficient, you are much better at doing something with those skills. |
