"virtually" the same as "nearly"?

The following is my question:

He is, seeming, the asssistant of the president; however, he is virtually the real boss of the company.

In the above sentence, can I replace "virtually" with "nearly"? Is there any difference?

virtually - nearly, almost
nearly = very close to, almost.

They are synonymous.
