Hello teachers. Could you help me with the following sentences?
A: Many of those injured by landmines often live lives of misery, poverty, and discrimination.
B: Many of those injured by landmines often live miserable, poor, and discriminated lives.
Do they have the same meaning? If not, could you paraphrase the expression "live lives of misery, poverty, and discrimination"?
Thank you.

They are almost identical in meaning. Poverty means: the state of being extremely poor..
Poor means lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal.
Poor can also mean: deserving of sympathy or pity, or of a low or inferior standard, or quality.
Poverty specifically means the lack of money. Poor could also indicate the effect on their lives of injuries caused by landmines. In my opinion, poor is the better word.
They live lives in which they are poor, miserable, and discriminated against. |
