I'm not sure about the first sentence, because "is" doesn't make sense there. One possibility could be "I checked it in a dictionary, I am sure."
For the ring question: They can both be used, but in different ways. "Ring shape" acts as a noun: "The bird's nest had a ring shape." "Ring-shaped" (often hyphenated) acts as an adjective: "The cakes were ring-shaped." |

You need the past tense: I checked this in a dictionary. I am sure. |
