| To an atheist, all forms of deity are a false projection, pure and simple. We attribute human traits to God such as mercy and love, set these traits upon an altar, and then proceed to pray to them. Every image of God, then, including the most abstract ones, is completely empty (by abstract I mean the God of Islam and orthodox Judaism, neither of which is allowed to be portrayed with a human face). According to the atheist, religion is the ultimate illusion since we are only worshiping ourselves secondhand. |
1. Why are all forms of deity pure and simple to an atheist in the quote?
2. What words or phrase can 'pure and simple' be replaced with?
3. What does 'by abstract' mean?
4.Can I replace 'by abstract' with 'in the abstract' ?
Thanks |

1. To an atheist, all forms of a deity are a false projection, pure and simple. It does not mean that forms of a deity are pure and simple.
2. The meaning of "pure and simple" is that the sentence is true, and that's all there is. It doesn't require a lot of explanation.
3. "by abstract" means "by using the word "abstract", I mean...."
4. No. |
