Dear teachers:
Recently I study for the GMAT, and I got some question. The answer is below

..in the text book publishing business, the second quarter is historically weak, because revenues are low and marketng expenses are high as companies prepare for the coming school year.

And I think that low..prepare can substitute for low and their marketing expenses are high as they prepare. I think that is clearer and more simply. But I dont know why this is wrong. Hope teachers can give me some advice.
Sean

Well, "they" is a pronoun, which means that it has to refer to something (the antecedent of the pronoun). If you just substitute "they" for "companies," it will be more confusing, because you haven't yet told us who "they" are.

Also, you wouldn't want to have "...and their marketing expenses are high..." - not only because of the lack of antecedent, but you've also destroyed the parallel structure of the sentence:

revenues are low (no "their" there)
expense are high

We don't need a possessive pronoun here in this case, because we understand that this is discussing a general situation: something that is generally true for the textbook publishing industry.

Hope this helps Wink
