Yes. The two phrases are synonymous.

No, the two have different meanings.
"along the way" means "on the journey, on the way."
Since the author is talking about changing from a child to an adult, he's viewing this personal evolution as a kind of journey, the journey from childhood to adulthood.

Not quite. Here's where the author is going with that last sentence:
"in symbolic form as dreams do" refers to the way our self-reflections tell our own story. It's not a literal story, but a story full of symbolism, like a dream. Because things are symbolic and not literal, the author is saying it's like looking into a clouded mirror - you can't see things clearly (like when things are literal), but you have to interpret what you see (like with dream symbols) because of the mirror being cloudy.
