In the sentence"The result is not very important to us, but if we do win, then so much the better.", how to explain the underlined part according to the grammar rules ?

Hello Puzzle, It is a phrase, an old expression. Just like when using to then the verb in infinitive form. Then use to and the verb in ing form with the phrase looking forward to.

Example to have
looking forward to having

the rule is to have but with the phrase it has an exception. I hope this helps.
