| I have heard of professional football players who claim that at a certain point in every game, the game takes over, and they feel as if they are going through the motions of a dance. Instead of using every ounce of will to make it downfield to catch a pass, they see themselves running ahead and meeting the ball as if destined. The God of peace isnt found by diving within so much as he rises from within when the time is right. |
1. What does 'the game takes over' mean?
(I think that the verb 'take over' has to have a living thing subject, but in this case 'the game' is not a living thing subject.)
2. Does 'go through' mean 'experience' ?
3. What does 'every ounce of will' mean?
4. What does 'it' mean?
5.Does 'catch a pass' mean 'catch a ball being passing'?
6. Could you paraphrase the last lined sentence?
Thanks. |

1. What does 'the game takes over' mean?
It means that, subjectively to the player, it is as though he is immersed in the game like an actor in a play, and is playing the role given him, doing what he is supposed to do and is destined to do.
2. Does 'go through' mean 'experience' ?
No. Going through the motions means performing the role while being disembodied from it. The player is a part in the machine, doing his part, but not feeling as though he is actively doing anything.
3. What does 'every ounce of will' mean?
It means every bit of one's conscious effort. Instead of trying his best to run downfield to catch the pass, the player is, again, playing his part and doing what the game is making him do, almost without effort.
4. What does 'it' mean?
To make it downfield means to arrive there.
5.Does 'catch a pass' mean 'catch a ball being passing'?
No. In American football, when the ball is thrown, that is a pass. The receiver tries to catch the pass and continue downfield, all the way to the goal line if he can. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
