There was once a guy who loved his girlfriend very much. This romantic guy folded 1,000 pieces of paper cranes as a gift to his girl. Although he was just an unimportant person in his company, they were very happy together until one day, the girl told him she was going to Paris and would never come back, adding that she couldn't imagine any future for the both of them, so they went their own ways there and then. Heart-broken, the guy agreed. But when he regained his ____, he worked hard day and night. Finally with all these hard work, he set his own company up.
A. strength B. confidence

The given answer to the blank is B (confidence). Does A make sense in this context?

Thanks for your consideration!

Jason

Honestly, neither answer makes a lot of sense to me.

The text before only says that he was heart-broken. It doesn't say that he had lost either strength or confidence!

I think confidence sounds a little more natural, as it is common to lose confidence when someone breaks up with you. So the reader might imagine he had lost confidence even though it doesn't say so specifically.

But there is nothing to suggest that he lost strength. You would need an extra sentence, like "He stopped eating and became very weak for a while."

Hope helps,
Ian
