The following are my questions:
Scientists working for L’Oreal in Paris have discovered the source of straight and curly hair. The key, it turns out, is ______ the root of the hair, a few millimeters below the scalp.
(A) on (B) at (C) in (D) for
The answer is (C) in, but how about (B) at? Is there any difference in their meanings?

One place where children soak up A characteristics is school, which is, by its very nature, a highly competitive institution. Too many schools adopt the `win at all costs' moral standard and measure their success by sporting achievements.
What does "sporting achievements" mean in the above sentence? Would someone please paraphrase it?
Thanks for your kindly help. |

1) As prepositions for location, normally "in" suggests "inside" and "at" suggests "near".
So if the the thing they have discovered is physically inside the hair, "at" would not be OK
2) "Success in sport"
Hope helps,
