The following is Saoris thank-you note for the dinner at the Sabatinis.

Make each verb, given in the parentheses below.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Sabatini,

Thank you for your warm hospitality! I really had a good time last Sunday.
I had never eaten such delicious Italian food. The lasagna, tiramisu, and espresso were especially tasty. You both ( 1. cook ) like professional chefs! I (2. know ) you ( 3. prepare ) for the party all day Sunday.
Again, thank you for a wonderful time.

Yours, Kasuga Saori

The above was given in a tense drill in an English grammar lesson the other day, and the given answers were as follows.
1. cook 2. know 3. had been preparing

I thought there could be more than one set of answers. Let me show you two of the sets I think of here.
One is:.
(A) 1. cooked 2. knew 3. had prepared
Another is:
(B) 1. cook 2. know 3. prepared

Would you give me a set or two of your choices? The suitable decision on the tense in English passages is a little confusing to me?

I'd put 1. cook 2. know and 3. were preparing!

Hope helps,
Ian

I'd put 1) cook 2) know and 3) had been preparing

1 and 2 are in the Present simple because I believe this is ALWAYS true
3 in the past perfect continuous because I'm thinking of the work that took place before the dinner last Sunday

I agree with Ian Coldwell on the Verb Tenses and would use 1) cook 2) know and 3) had been preparing.

I think it would help for you to go over these worksheets on Verb Tenses. They are a great resource!
