Does "lift a mystery" mean "solve a mystery"? Why lift?

It's bad English.
I think ... that the origin is "the mist (or fog) has lifted", meaning now we can see clearly.
And here I think someone is confusing mist and mystery, and putting it in the passive, and it all comes out a bit strange.
