Dear English Teachers,

In the following sentence, I have no clue what it means by "polite conversations of her own culture." Would you help me figure out the meaning? Thank you!

Emily Carr preferred the culture of the First Nations people and the life she led on her explorations to the dresses and polite conversations of her own culture.

Does "polite conversation of her own culture" make sense in the above context? It sounds odd and out of place to me. Please help me.

I think it's quite simple: in "her culture", the background of race or class or nationality that she comes from, people wear nice dresses and talk politely (probably without saying anything meaningful).

And she doesn't like it much. She prefers exploring other, more interesting cultures.

Hope helps,
ian
