Dear teachers,

I know"receipt" is the paper that we'll receive after buying something with details of what we've bought. Recently, I happened to send some samples of a company to other countries, and I needed to put a "invoice" with the packages in order to pass the customs. The contents of both "receipt"and "invoice" is about the same, which made me confuse about the differences between them.

Thus, me question is what's the differences between "invoice" and "receipt"?

An invoice has:

name of purchaser or company
Date of purchase
Order number
price
shipping address
shipping method
billing address

Sometimes an invoice comes before the payment, especially for things on consignment. An invoice is essentially a "bill" for things to be bought or that have been bought. It can also be used to show proof of payment.

A receipt is usually a more simple document.

It's usually a piece of paper from a cash register showing date, item, price, and payment method. A receipt is almost always given after the purchase, not before. Some businesses make hand written receipts, usually smaller businesses.

You usually get invoices for costlier items, and receipts for simple items. Invoices are generated between businesses (like a distributor invoice to a supermarket). Receipts are usually for the end customer (like the receipt you get from the supermarket).
