Hi everybody

"He distinguished himself in mathematics and physical science, earning his B.A. degree in 1893 and his M.A. in 1894.

Can anyone tell me what kind of degree(s) are B.A. and M.A.?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Alexandra,

B.A. stands for A Bachelor of Arts degree. It's the typical degree a student earns after completing 4 years of college. At some colleges, students of math or science receive a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) instead of a B.A. It's the same degree, really, but differerentiates the area of study.

M.A. (it could likewise be M.S.) stands for Master's of Arts degree. It's called a postgraduate degree (with postgraduate referring to the completion of the B.A.). Depending on the field of study, it involves 1 or 2 years of specialized study in a particular field after completion of the B.A.
