Very Happy You're right, Samira, it's also the country of lakes and Santa-Claus. I'm really glad to hear you know Finland! I've heard such funny stories of people thinking it's part of Japan... I don't know if people really think so, though. Maybe it's just a story, a bit of a joke, I guess... Rolling Eyes

Hey, friends, I'm from the USA.
I hope you all have a wonderful spring and
a terrific summer!

Let's hope the war in Iraq ends soon and that
Bush will pull out the troops.

You had a finnish friend, great! Very Happy A friend of mine also has friends in China and she has been to China a couple of times. She said she enjoyed it very much. I'd like to visit China, too. I've heard it's a very interesting and beautiful place.

Hi Dordi,

I'm not sure, but there may be a drink bar called "Finland" in Japan. Laughing

I'm sure that Japan is an interesting and beautiful country, too.

Please drop in at Japan when you are in China.

See you.

I'm from Lincoln, Nebraska, located in the middle of everyone's favorite global policeman/bully, the U S of A. Essentially, Nebraska is just a little bit north of the true center of the U.S. The state is mostly flat, and is home to around 1.7 million people, many of whom are involved in farming or farming-related activities. There is a lot of empty land, because a lot of people live in the cities like Lincoln (225,000) or Omaha (360,000). A lot of young people want to leave the state and go somewhere more "exciting." However, I like it here because there's not very much crime or pollution. . . it's not the crazy fast-paced life like you might see on TV shows or movies set in New York City/Boston/Miami/Los Angeles/etc. Sure, Nebraska might not be as exciting as those places, but it is relatively cheaper and safer to live here, and that's what's important to me.

At any rate, I hope you all enjoyed this slice of the U.S. that doesn't get shown very much in the popular culture.

Hm, I think, if you want to see the whole thing precisely, you are able to do so. In our english classes the Middle West was presented over and over again deputizing for those states, which haven't much in common with the pictures you see in TV and even there, above all in movies, the "calm" USA is shown from time to time. So I guess, some people just don't want to see, that there is a second side of the coin.

I suppose you do see the Midwest in the media from time to time. However, a lot of the time, the Midwest (along with the South and the Rocky Mountain regions) is shown as a depressing, boring place where nothing interesting ever happens. (Except, of course, for hate crimes such as the Matthew Shepard murder (in Wyoming) and the killing of Teena Brandon (in Nebraska, as seen in "Boys don't Cry").) And, the people of those regions are often portrayed as stupid, uneducated, hateful, or racist. Or, in movies like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," people living in rural areas appear as sadistic, psychotic killers who will prey on anyone that happens to wander through.
