I eamiled my friend who was always nice to me in the US on the day before I left for Japan. I really wanted to say thank you to him. He emailed me back soon and he wrote,"It was a blessing for me to read." I guess it was a good meaning, but I don't know what exactly it means or I have never said it before.
Please tell me what exactly it means and when you say it. |

He means that he was very happy to get your email.
It has a certain religious connotation; a blessing is a favour from God in one of its meanings and when a priest asks God to "bless"the congregation with good health, happiness and so on he is said to be "blessing" his congregation. |

Thank you for answering my question. It was my frist time to post, so I was glad that I got your reply. 
He is a christan. I wonder if he used the word because of it.
Is it o.k. if I say it when I am very happy? I'm not a christian.
I have one more question in his email. I will post it as a new topic. |

It is OK if you say you're happy. You can say anything you would say to a similar friend in Japan.
If he is a very devout Christian and you are of a different religion, it might be a source of friction between you, if this relationship goes beyond the email stage. |

obelix is right. it was a blessing for me to read is a religious way for saying, "reading your letter really made me happy, or really made me feel good."

I am not Christian, but I will try saying it when I am really happy.
You mean it is o.k. , right?
He is not a very devote christian or I am not religious. Your comment made me a little nervous , but we can try to understand each other.
By the way, what "if this relationship goes beyond the email stage. " means? |

| "Its a blessing" can be used in a religious sense, or absolutely none at all. The phrase is so common that it has lost some of its derivational meaning. For example, an atheist could say, "its a blessing" |
