Hello!Everbody,it was nice to meet all of you discussing English- learning on line. I am a junior college student standing in Taipei.
I developed a love in learning English since I was in my senior high.
I keep in touch to enchancing my English proficiency for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In order to improve my speaking ability, I form a habit of reciting English articles at least half an hour everyday,in addition to practicing continuous ly, I always go the English Cornor (a place where one can chat with the foreigner in the campus.)to connect with thier new imformation, practicing my speaking ability with our exchange students there. It's really a good experience to training myself involving thier group and improving my English.
What I am worry about is that each time when our class has a course of makeing a short presentation for 5 to 10 minutes by oneself,I got very unusal nervous and what I was preparing to say were blanked immediately . I have no idea to make myself to be calm , once I standed on the stage, I just unable to do the outmost of my performance. Can anybody willing to give my any advice or tell me how to get rid of the fear of speaking in front of the class ?

I would appreciate for any of your suggestion !
Thank you so much !

Karen

Sound like me except I am worse. However, this doesn't forbid me from giving out free advice though.

What Karen should do to overcome nervousness

1. Next time tell the class in English you are a nervous wreck, that you are suffering from a phobia for public speaking.
2. Tell them you are reading from a prepared statement until the phobia has gone away. You need everybody's help.
3. Proceed to read from your paper.
4. When done,
(a). Ask class if they know what nervous wreck and phobia are. If they don't, go to the blackboard and explain to class. (You don't use blackboard anymore, do you?)
(b). Tell them you learn this trick from an old Taiwanese man on this website.
(c). Bow and thank teacher and class.
5. Consider joining Toast Master's club.

What do you think?

Hello. At one time I was a music major. I had to play recitals in front of students and faculty. At first, it was very difficult. I found that with each recital, the nervousness diminished. So, practice in front of people as much as possible.

Karen,

Let us know how you are doing in your class, would you? We don't want you to faint in front of your class.

Well, you can always try the well-known "2 steps method":

1. Find an empty classroom. Imagine that the empty 110 chairs in front of you are not chairs but people, and give the presentation.

2. Then, when you lecture before real people, imagine they're not people, but chairs.

Proven Wink
