I got an email from a friend. Before her signature, instead of using 'truly yours',' sincerely yours', she put 'love' there.

Then someone told me the word 'love' could be used before signature in letters for any friends even if they're not very close, it doesn't mean"I love you"

I'm now really confused by this word. Is anyone here by the chance the authority of English letters and can give me an explanation?

The word love is used nowadays in an informal sense among acquaintances. If a person signs off a letter to you with "Love, Anna", it does not mean that she loves you in a romantic sense (although it may).

In England, you may go into a restaurant of a certain type, and the waitress, whom you have never met before, might say to you, "What can I get you, Love?" It is merely a friendly mode of address and has nothing to do with romantic love.

Of course, this is very confusing to some of us, who live in more formal societies and my advice to you would be not to use it lightly yourself and also not to read too much into it, if someone says it to you.

Naturally if she or he kisses you and says to you wistfully, "I love you!" Then you may suppose you are either in trouble or lucky.

I have the following "LOVE" experience want to share with you all, those are from TV drama I hear before.

Sence 1: A man talk to other man: "You know how much I love you."
Love mean respect at this situation, they are not gay.

Sence 2: A taxi driver talk to his female client: "twenty, love."
Love mean "my dear" at this situation, he is not in love with this female client.

Sence 3: A marketer ask a woman: "How many, love?"
Love mean "you want", he is also not in love with this woman.

i usualy use this word b4 my signature.this is something ordinary many people use the same technique.
as asterix said it mainly doesn't mean romantic.

Love mean respect in many situation???

lovw doesnt mean in the same all situation ...
some times whin i use the word love idonnt mean i am ilove with the person who i sent the message for.....

but sometimes i mean it....(for paricular person oly)

Love is seeing a new side of a person you thought you knew

i think nowadays the word LOVE has 2 many meanings

according 2 the time and place it's said in.

1- a mother loves her children
2- a teacher loves his/her students
3- friend loves his/her friend
4-love of lovers this the old usage of the word LOVE.
5-as siad above LOVE CAN BE USED IN EVERYWHERE IN THIS LIFE
