I found this instruction in the note book of a student.
[Use "not" of the following]
'
I wonder if "of " is correct in this sentence. and the word "following" should be in plural form

It's a bit cryptic the way you have written it, and doesn't make much sense.
Perhaps it should have read: Use "not" with the following. I think it depends on what the following is.
So, I would say of is incorrect in the sentence. |

I would just like to add one thing to Obelix's reply.
Following is never plural.....
In this instance it appears to be an adjective (with a hidden noun...)
So for example if underneath that sentence were a list of verbs...
The sentence - use 'not' with the following..... refers to the verbs without mentioning them.
The plural form therefore goes on verbS and not the adjective 'following'
