The verb - to screen does have, as one of its meanings, to check on a person for the presence (or absence) of a quality, so if you want to use it, you could say, she offered to screen him for the scholarship.
This means that she offered to give him an opportunity to demonstrate whether, in her opinion, he would be able to win the scholarship. |
