|
|
1. Certainly, you are beautiful. ---- Certainly is an adverb modifying the entire sentence "you are beautiful."
2. You are certainly beautiful. --- Beautiful is a subject compliment, an adjective predicate? Certainly modifies beautiful.
3. You are certainly a beautiful girl. A beautiful girl is a subject compliment, a noun predicate? Cetainly modifies "a beautiful girl."
Would you shed some lights?
Thanks.

certainly beautiful is the subject complement
Certainly is an adverb here adding emphasis to 'beautiful'
In order to be predicative, and adjective needs to occur alone e.g. You are tall

A very basic definition of a predicate is 'everything in a sentence after the subject'
Therefore here 'are certainly a beautiful girl' is the predicate
'certainly a beautiful girl' is the subject complement - as 'certainly' is adding emphasis to the noun phrase 'a beautiful girl'
Hope this helps

Thanks. Do you think in #3, certainly is modifying ARE?
