1. This weekend means this coming weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday night.
2. Last weekend is the weekend that just passed.
3. Last Monday is last week's Monday. If today is Tuesday, last Monday happened 8 days ago.
4. By Friday means before the end of Friday, not before Friday.
Thanks.

Hi BMO,
1-2. Correct. The problem is that people are careless with these phrases, so, for example, when someone says "this weekend," sometimes they mean "last weekend." Or if it's Monday, "last weekend" might mean the weekend before the one that just ended. Often you will hear someone saying one of those phrases, and then another person clarifying which weekend was meant.
3. Correct. This phrase creates much less confusion than the one above. The exception is when "last xxx-day" is yesterday or the day before. Then there is cofusion whether it is 1 or 2 days ago, or 8 or 9.
4. I think it means before Friday, but I'm not posiive. It's another phrase that creates confusion. Better is "by Friday at 5:00 PM" or "by the end of Friday."
English sure is fun... uh... right? |

I think that in practical terms, if someone mentioned "last Tuesday" to me (today is Wednesday as I am posting this), I would interpret it as the Tuesday of the previous week, that is, 2/15. |
