Hi. I'm a Japanese student of English. In Japanese, when the batter is hit by a pitch, we call it "dead ball." I learned this is a typical example of the "Japanese English" and does not make sense to native speakers of English. But the other night I was watching an episode of the TV sit-com "Spin City" and when Charlie Sheen was hit by a pitch, the umpire said "Dead ball!" Or that's what I thought I heard. Was that another export item from Japan? Or did I just mishear? Then, what could it have been  |
