Zone = area
Dark place = area that is dark, threatening, depressing, dangerous or some other negative adjective.

To be in a zone is used especially in sports. It means that you are concentrating so well that you seem to be incapable of doing anything wrong. A couple of years ago when Tiger Woods won 4 major golf tournaments in a row, he was in a zone. When a basketball player scores 50 points in a game, he/she is in a zone.
